In the midst of this crisis, we are relieved to report that all agents and staff at Island Sotheby's International Realty are safe though we have all been greatly affected by the profound loss of life and community. Latest news about the Maui Wildfire Disaster
August 16th:
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will visit Hawai‘i on Monday, August 21, to observe the impact of the Maui fires and join the state in mourning the devastating loss of life and land that has occurred across the island, as well as to discuss next steps in the recovery efforts. While on the ground, the President, First Lady, and Governor Josh Green, M.D., will meet with first responders, survivors, and federal, state, and local officials. Read entire press release.
Following the opening of the Lāhāina Bypass on Aug. 15, 2023, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) began installing dust screens around Lāhainā Town. The dust screens will reduce the spread of potentially hazardous materials across the roadways. This measure is being taken to protect highway users along Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) and the Lāhāina Bypass (Route 3000). Read entire press release.
August 15th:
Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing opening Lahaina Satellite Office
The County of Maui Division of Motor Vehicles and Licensing’s Lahaina Satellite Office will be available beginning Wednesday, August 16, to assist West Maui residents whose Hawaiʻi driver’s licenses or Hawaiʻi State Identification cards have been lost or destroyed by wildfires.

Governor Green announces opening of road to Lahaina
Gov. Josh Green today announced that after direct discussions with Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen; Maui County Fire and Public Safety Department Chief Bradley Ventura; Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier, and Dual Status Commander of Joint Task Force-50 Brigadier General Stephen Logan, the road to Lahaina, Honoapiʻilani Highway at Maʻalaea, will open starting at 6 tonight, Aug. 15, 2023, to West Maui residents, first responders and West Maui employees.
Wednesday, Aug.16, 2023, the road to Lahaina will open to all motorists daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Access from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. will be limited to West Maui residents, first responders and West Maui employees.
Road to Lahaina Schedule – Starting Wednesday:

State officials are urging the public to access West Maui only if necessary to live, work, or volunteer. Read entire press release.
Donations of non-perishable food, bottled water and hygiene products are being accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. near a vacant unit in Queen Ka’ahumanu Center at the Kane Street entrance. The new site is a partnership among the county, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke and Mahi Pono. Mahi Pono will provide staff for the facility and work under leadership of Salvation Army and Feed My Sheep to coordinate food and supplies distribution. The collection site at War Memorial Complex field off Kanaloa Avenue was closed today, 8/14, in lieu of the new site.

Seeking Shelter. These are the current shelter locations, once you have temporary shelter sign up for the Hawaiʻi Fire Relief Housing program which will assist in connecting those in urgent need of housing due to the Maui fires, with Hawaiʻi homeowners willing to assist by offering unoccupied rooms, units or houses on a temporary basis.
Offering Shelter. Please register on the Hawaiʻi Fire Relief Housing program website and Airbnb.org if you have a room, unit, or home to offer for displaced individuals and families.
File a claim with your insurance. Whether you have homeowners or renters insurance, they should be able to get a check to you right away for immediate expenses. In addition, the policy will generally cover temporary shelter for a few months or up to 2 years.
Register with FEMA for disaster assistance. If you don't have insurance, or once you have already filed a claim with your insurance go to DisasterAssistance.gov to register for federal assistance. Reach FEMA via phone at 800-621-3362.
